Wait. Soda is all you drink? And you think trans fats have anything to do with your lamentable physical condition? Just look at how many calories you're drinking!

Soda quietly makes you fat, and eventually kills you. Quit drinking that shit!

True. Hard liquor as well.

I don't drink any of those on any regular basis whatsoever. My last hard drink was over 6 months ago, and I haven't had a beer or malt of any sort in almost as long. I NEVER drink soda (hate the stuff).

Refined sugar foods are my weakness. I love ice cream and candy, much to my waistline's chagrin.

Beer doesn't cause bone density or tooth enamel loss, though.

Dude, when did I say my physical condition was "lamentable"? I'm in good shape. My point was, according to the city, I should be HEALTHIER because of their new law.

I said I've seen no change (nor should I). Basically, its just more liberal bullshit the city is forcing us to endure. I like my trans fats. I like my sugar sodas. I could care less about where people smoke. But the city deems that it knows better then I do. Fuck them.

I'm not fat. And soda is not making me fat, nor will it.

And that's why we have moderation, because as soon as you lose it, everything's bad for you.

If it doesn't make you fat, it will get your teeth, bone density and kidneys/excretion system eventually.

The points that continue to pop up on this board are
1. consumers are lazy
2. consumers are often ignorant if not lazy
3. capitalist manufacturing/transport costs are considered more important than nutritional content [e.g. ppl who can't afford fresh produce]
4. yall think legislators are crap for not doing anything, and crap for what they DO do.

If your life coincides with one of these points, then you're just................venting?

I had margaritas for beer.

I'll worry about it in 10 years... I just don't like the Government thinking they know whats best for me... They can fuck the fuck off...

(and in 10 years, youre probably right, I will put on weight, but it wont be because of soda, it'll be because my metabolism will finally slow down... I can't wait...)

It probably will do all thoes things, but I don't care... And it should be MY choice, not the fucking Mayor or Governors choice...

And in regards to #4... First of all, I never asked the legistlators to do crap. As far as I'm concerned, we have enough laws, we don't need em at all. Secondly, I don't think its any of law makers business to regulate my freedom of choice when it comes to what I eat. But, even if it is, then a TAX is not the solution. All it does is give the lawmakers more money to play with, it does not SOLVE anything. If they want to fix shit, then fix it, but don't tax it, and call it a fix. Thats bullshit.

Personally, I think the problem goes back to the gov't subsidy of corn that lead to its overproduction in the first place. Hence the need to develop HFCS before inserting it into fucking everything.

My dad was thin as a rail when he was a kid (just like me), and when he was between 30-35, thats when it hit him... So I'm assuming the same will happen to me... And my dads case was a long time ago, before all this highly processed food stuff...

But fine, I'll grant you that soda and unhealthy eating in general probably won't help, but so what? Why shouldnt that be MY descision? Why do we give politicians so much power over us?

Agreed...

And I do prefer cane sugar over HFCS, but what can you do? I'm not the head of the company who makes the stuff...

I actually did write to Pepsi, told em how much I loved their sugar "throwback" soda... But they wrote back and told me they had no plans to keep making it, past their 8 week period... I stockpiled it... But now it's all gone... :(

*shrug* If the public, in the form of the government, has to deal fiscally with the consequences of deliberate poor choices, then I think it is reasonable to expect recompense. Doesn't seem to be much different than a "sin" tax on cigarettes or alcohol.

Um, well, you can get involved in activism regarding HFCS. There's a pretty strong movement to have it banned in this country. Writing a letter is a damn good start, since it shows active interest in one direction versus another.

Write again and whine at them. Being a petulant PITA can be a strength at times. ;)

I don't support any "sin" taxes...

Its just another way to hose the consumer... It doesn't actually "fix" the "sin", just takes money out of the little guys pocket...

It might not "fix" the "sin" in all cases, but whether you or I support it or not, it does successfully make the "sin" economically less desirable. You're right in a sense that it is a way to hose the consumer, but it's only aimed at a specific consumer.

An economist's method of deterring an action that even indirectly hurts society or the economy (pollution is a textbook example, since it doesn't just harm the polluter) is to tax it. According to their school of thought, it doesn't even matter what happens with the tax money once it's collected; to the economist it only matters that economic burden suffered by society is shifted back on the ones causing the problem. Granted, legislators don't always view the practice in such a cut-and-dried manner, nor should they in all cases. Moreover, a distinction needs to be drawn between those actions which verifiably pose a cost to society and those which some simply find distasteful.

Now, away from the tangent of "sin taxes" in general and back to the topic of discussion: under which category do HFCS and trans-fats fall? While a solid case could be made for either side, it seems pretty clear these foods are harming more than just the people consuming them. I'm no expert, but isn't HFCS a major contributing factor to diabetes? Medicare pays huge sums of money annually for diabetes treatment, which in turn costs us all money. Why shouldn't those causing the problem pay a little more to do so?
